Lickey is a small village in the northern part of the County of Worcestershire located close to Bromsgrove on the Lickey Ridge. The name of the village is derived from ‘Leac’ meaning clearing and ‘hey’ meaning enclosed space. Back in the middle of the 18th century the village held its own races on Wednesday 24th August 1757, although the meeting appears to have been a one-off. The principal race that day was the Purse over 4 miles which was won by Mr Woolley’s Little Blood.
